Working at a startup

I've been working at a small business specializing in Apple products for the past five years, and have been fortunate enough to not only witness, but also contribute to, the growth and success of this company.  I work directly alongside the owner: an entrepreneur who started his first company at the age of 18, and has always been determined to be his own boss.

He's now 34, and started this company at the end of 2010.  I began working there the following summer, and there's been a very close group of us who've been around ever since.  We've each taken on greater responsibilities as the size of the company has grown, and we've been able to rely on each other to get things done.  It's allowed me to see how critical it is to find the right people to sustain a company longterm, and weather the good times with the bad.

My time at this company is drawing to a close, as I move on to a new chapter in my life.  I know I'm going to miss it greatly, and hope to always retain the invaluable lessons I've learned as I move on to new projects.

  2. Graham, I think it is very underrated that fact that in order for a business to grow the right people need to be found to sustain a company longterm. You mentioning this makes me understand that concept. I think it's cool that you have been working at a company as a college student, good luck with your future endeavors and your blog posts.

  3. I'm very curious why your time at the company is coming to a close--maybe we can talk about that during our interview.

You're completely right about finding the right fit when hiring. It's still a bit of a mystery to me, but the equation seems to have to do with passion someone has for the business itself, their personal drive and how engaged/connected they are.

  4. Oops! I've always been bad at linking to my posts. You can see my story here: http://adventuresinent.blogspot.com/2016/01/my-entrepreneurship-story.html

I think because our stories are dissimilar, it simply didn't occur to me to tell you my spiel.

  5. Hi Graham,
That's pretty awesome that you've been able to work with the company from the start and actually see what it takes to start and run a successful business. Like Kelly said it sounds like a great company and a expanding company and I'm also curious of why your time has to end there. Great post and I wish you the best of luck.

  6. Graham, it's an incredible opportunity that you've had to work directly alongside a successful entrepreneur already. I believe that this sort of hands on experience will be invaluable moving forward, and provides you with a strong basis for any future endeavors.

Additionally, I especially liked the point you made about finding the right people; loyalty and commitment to the product are pivotal for a successful business and it's good to have exposure to that early on.

  7. Graham, your experience working for a start up is very interesting, and I can definitely relate to your experiences working in a technology company as I work in a large big box electronics store and specialize in Apple products as well, but it is definitely more useful to learn on a smaller scale in a start up. Both in practices, and struggles, the journey of a start up is a unique experience is very useful to entrepreneurial successes. You have a good base of knowledge for starting any business ventures you may start in the future!
